Hearing Loss Foundation

Access to hearing healthcare should not depend on income, geography or circumstance. Yet across South Africa and many parts of Africa, there remains a significant divide between those who can access specialist medical care and hearing technology and those who cannot.

Hearing Loss Foundation Africa exists to help close this gap. Through targeted programmes, we aim to bring essential hearing services and life-changing technology to children, families and communities who might otherwise go without care.Our programmes are designed to address the barriers that prevent children and adults from accessing quality hearing healthcare. From community-based hearing services and hearing technology to early intervention and advocacy, each programme is focused on creating practical, sustainable change.

Rural Children’s Hearing Programme

Thousands of children in rural and underserved communities may have limited access to routine hearing screening and specialist hearing care. When hearing loss goes unidentified, it can affect a child’s speech, language development, education and ability to communicate.

Through our Rural Children’s Hearing Programme, we aim to take hearing screening directly into communities, helping to identify children who may need further assessment and connecting families with appropriate care and support.

Hearing Aid Access Programme

For many people living with hearing loss, the cost of hearing aids and ongoing hearing care can make treatment inaccessible. Without appropriate hearing technology, hearing loss can affect communication, education, employment and participation in everyday life.

Our Hearing Aid Access Programme aims to provide appropriate hearing aids to qualifying children ,adults and older people who would otherwise be unable to afford them, together with the professional fitting, counselling and follow-up care needed to achieve meaningful benefit

Hearing Rehabilitation & Communication Programme

Hearing loss can affect communication, independence, relationships, education, employment and quality of life at every age. For adults and older people in particular, appropriate hearing care can play an important role in maintaining communication and participation in family and community life.

Our Hearing Rehabilitation & Communication Programme will support children, adults and older people following the identification and treatment of hearing loss. Support may include hearing rehabilitation, communication strategies, counselling, family guidance and, where appropriate, speech and language intervention.

Community & Rural Hearing Care Programme

Across South Africa and other parts of Africa, many people living in rural and underserved communities face significant barriers to accessing hearing healthcare. Distance, cost and limited availability of specialist services can mean that hearing loss remains undiagnosed or untreated for years.

Our Community & Rural Hearing Care Programme aims to bring hearing healthcare closer to the people who need it most. Through community outreach, hearing screening and assessment, referral pathways and access to appropriate care, we aim to reach children, adults and older people who may otherwise have little or no access to hearing services.

Innovation & Hearing Technology

Technology is transforming hearing healthcare. Hearing Loss Foundation Africa aims to ensure that these advances also reach people and communities who have traditionally had limited access to specialist hearing services.

Working with hearing technology companies and industry partners, we aim to expand access to innovative solutions including AI-powered hearing aids, smartphone-enabled hearing technology and remote support.

Our innovation initiatives will also include newborn hearing screening programmes to support earlier identification of hearing loss, as well as Hearing Technology Test Drives, giving people the opportunity to experience appropriate hearing solutions and better understand the technology available to them.

Our goal is simple: innovation should help close the hearing healthcare gap, not widen it.

Advocacy & Research

People living with hearing loss can face barriers that extend far beyond access to healthcare. These may affect education, employment, communication, independence and full participation in society.

Hearing Loss Foundation Africa aims to advocate for greater recognition of hearing healthcare as an essential part of healthcare and for improved access to hearing services, technology and support for underserved communities.

Through research, collaboration and community engagement, we aim to better understand the experiences and needs of people living with hearing loss across Africa. We will use these insights to support evidence-based programmes, improve accessibility and contribute to better hearing healthcare services.

Most importantly, we believe people living with hearing loss should have a voice in the decisions, services and policies that affect their lives.

Cochlear Implant Access Programme

For people with severe to profound hearing loss who receive limited benefit from hearing aids, a cochlear implant can provide access to sound and create life-changing opportunities for communication, independence, education and participation in everyday life.

Yet cochlear implantation requires specialist assessment, surgery, technology and ongoing rehabilitation, placing it financially beyond the reach of many individuals and families.

Through our Cochlear Implant Access Programme, Hearing Loss Foundation Africa aims to work with medical professionals, cochlear implant providers and other partners to provide fully funded cochlear implant journeys for qualifying candidates who would otherwise be unable to afford them.

Our vision extends beyond providing the implant itself. Where programme resources allow, support will encompass the journey from candidacy assessment and implantation through activation, programming and appropriate rehabilitation and follow-up care.

Life-changing hearing technology should not be reserved only for those who can afford it.
